Shannon, Ireland’s newest town has now reached fifty years old and Dúchas na Sionna, the town’s heritage group are conducting a Social History Survey to find out more about how the community formed.  The project was launched on Friday 11th March in the Sean Lemass Public Library, where a display of photographs of Shannon since its beginnings in the early 1960s, has attracted great interest and comment.

Every household in Shannon received a questionnaire with their last Social Diary, and people are invited to drop off completed copies at the library or Leisure Centre.

The questionnaire is aimed at gathering information about what Shannon residents thought about coming to live in Ireland’s newest town.

The project is also looking for volunteers willing to have their stories and experiences of living in Shannon recorded. These interviews is will be a valuable contribution to the history of the town.  Each will also be a permanent record for the family as those taking part will get a personal  copy of the recording – something for the descendants when they come to research their family history.

The final intention is to have a book about Shannon based on these memories, and in the meantime there’s an interactive website and other ways that people of all ages can engage with the project. We’ve already had support from today’s teenagers.’

Dúchas na Sionna wishes to acknowledge the support of Cuimhneamh an Chláir (Memories of Clare) in providing recording equipment and encouragement for the Shannon Social History Project.
