Work began on draining the marshland at Rineanna to build Ireland’s first transatlantic
airport in 1936. By 1942 a serviceable airport had been established and was named
Shannon Airport. In October 1945 the first transatlantic commercial flights landed
at Shannon. Shannon became Europe’s most convenient stopping point before and after
the trip across the Atlantic.
In 1947 Shannon was established as the world’s first duty free airport and became
a model for other Duty Free facilities worldwide.Aer Rianta took over responsibility
for the airport in 1969 and in May 1971 a new, enlarged terminal was opened to cater
for the increase in passenger numbers.
The current airport terminal opened in March 2000 and has 40 check-in desks, 5 baggage
