In the early days of its existence the population of Shannon was drawn from all over
the country, indeed from all over the world. This gave Shannon Town a cosmopolitan
flavour that was unique in 1960s Ireland. Since then influxes of population groups
from, for example, Northern Ireland in the early 1970s, Chilean refugees and more
recently from countries such as Poland, Nigeria, India etc have contributed to the
diversity that is so much a part of the social fabric of Shannon.
The fact that so many people arrived in Shannon with no prior connection to the area
helped to create a unique community spirit which has continued to be a feature of
the town as it has matured and developed.
The current population of Shannon Town stands at 9,222
